Our story…

After a decade as a corporate art lawyer, our founder Fionnuala was all too familiar with the frustrating stories from artists, galleries, curators and collectors: unhappy accidents; early career mishaps; that (so-called) gentleman’s agreement that quickly turned… less-than-gentlemanly.

We believe these misfortunes are preventable. But clear guidance in a specialist, often-mysterious industry isn’t always available.

Canvas is more than a legal advice service, it’s a place where clients can be just as comfortable showing up to share good news or challenges. Where they can express excitement about a new work or project, and their passion is welcomed and shared. Where they’re heard, understood and helped.

We formed a team of like-minded lawyers who really understand the industry, with the commercial experience to know when a quick chat is all that’s needed and when it’s not so straightforward. We’re also hands-on - as happy helping a curator make last-minute catalogue edits as test running new online platforms.
